Meet Mal
I have been a teacher for 50 years— in the public schools, in prisons, and for the last 37 years at Coker University. I have devoted myself to my family, my community, and the future of South Carolina through my community service, teaching, and writing. I deeply believe that Congress must invest much more in America, to create more jobs, opportunities, and security for ALL of our people.
I have worked for human rights in Central America, the West Bank and Gaza. Working with the United Nations, I monitored the elections in Nicaragua in 1990 and in Mexico in 1994. I have served on numerous local boards including the homeless shelter, the Disabilities Board, Christmas in April (low-income housing), as well as the South Carolina Democratic Party. I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Darlington County Community Action Agency as well as Genesis Healthcare. I am a co-chair of the local Earth Day Festival, as well as the co-chair of the conference “Sustainability and Faith.”
My recent book, Burying the Lead: The Media and the JFK Assassination shows my desire to speak truth to power. For 12 years, I have also taught government and economics at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Math, helping students understand the importance of civic engagement and economic policy.
I live in Hartsville and am the proud father of two daughters, Geneva and Nicole. Geneva, who directs the youth ministry at her church, is married to Dr. Luke Baxley. They live in Beaufort, SC with their son Davis, and daughter Kate. My youngest daughter, Nicole, a college counselor, is married to Zach Miller, an aeronautical engineer. They live in Colorado.
