For me, the 4th of July is about celebrating freedom and family- burgers and barbeque, and honoring the journey of our American family.
Freedom inspires us and keeps us together. During the revolutionary war, when the patriot cause looked bleak, South Carolinians who risked their lives, their fortune and their sacred honor, turned the tide. Those volunteers, fighting from the swamps, gave freedom a fighting chance - they were men of many faiths, freed slaves, runaway slaves, and native Americans.
Every generation decides which freedoms to fight for. President Franklin Roosevelt fought for an America that would be free from fear, free from want, and a world free from fascism. Today, our country stands at a critical crossroads. Can we remain a republic? Can we lead the free world?
Yet… with all of our problems, when the American team marches into the Olympic Stadium, no other team looks like America, no other country looks like America.
E pluribus unum - out of many we are one. Enjoy the 4th! God bless America.
